Software Issues

You will need to consider the Operating System and Application software that you need to run your computer.

Operating System

An appropriate version of Windows will be supplied with your PC. You will need to consider whether to use the CiCS Managed Desktop Service or to manage the system yourself.

Managed Desktop

This is based on Windows XP and is used on all PCs in student computer workrooms and for many administrative purposes. It is installed on-site via the network and its advantages are that it provides a fully managed environment and centralises the tasks of managing the system and maintaining virus protection. Your own software can be added where it is compatible. Any serious problems can be cured simply by re-copying the basic hard disk image from the centre.

Windows XP

Windows XP is configured by the suppliers to connect to the University network and access all facilities except for the central application software that runs on the Managed Service. You will need to obtain and install your own software. CiCS can supply mainstream items at low cost.

Linux

Linux is an open system, written and supported by its users. It is not formally supported by CiCS.

Application Software

Most people will require Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access). The University rents certain Microsoft software under the Campus Agreement. Mainstream software is licensed centrally for on-campus use by staff and students across the whole University. There is no per-user cost except for CD duplication.

CDs may be purchased by staff only - available from the CiCS Reception Desk in the Computing Centre.
