Restricting web page access
You can restrict access to a web page by either setting it for University of Sheffield only or password protected access.
Internal audiences
To make it so that only people from the University of Sheffield can access the pages (ie on campus or using a VPN or RATS connection off campus), create a folder called shef-only in the public_html folder. Files put into shef-only can then be seen by 'internal visitors' only.
Password protection
- From the Tools menu in cPanel, click on the Password Protect Directories icon.
- Click on the directory you want to protect. If you want to protect a sub-directory, click on the directory icon to browse down the filesystem.
- Type a Protected Resource Name. This can be anything you like and will appear on the log in prompt when someone tries to visit your protected area.
- Type a UserName and Password for each user you want to give access. These usernames can be anything you want and are unconnected to your main University usernames (for corporate time, webmail, etc).
- Check the box next to the padlock and then click Save.
