Power-Saving Modes
Power-saving modes automatically shut-down computers of individual components which are not in use. This is done in such a way that the computers or components are quickly and automatically reactivated when needed.
Research Computers
Iceberg (Research High Performance Computing) runs a custom built power-management script which automatically powers down idle compute nodes to save energy, and brings them back on line when they're needed.
We've also configured the job scheduling software to ensure that jobs are distributed to maximise the use of each compute node, and minimise the number of machines which need to be running.
Managed Desktop
Following a software upgrade, all PCs in the Information Commons will now log users off after a period of inactivity.
While logged in to an open access PC, if at any time a student does not use the computer for 20 minutes they will receive a warning message. At this point the student will then have 5 minutes to confirm they are still using the computer. If they fail to do so then they will automatically be logged out.
