Setting up a Rats (Remote Access to Sheffield) connection
You can do this if you want to connect to the internet from home but do not have broadband. The University does have its own Internet Service called Rats which has been running for a number of years. Not many people use this now because they have broadband or because they have their own preferred Internet Service Provider giving better options than Rats
To set up Rats on your computer, first launch the utility called Internet Connect, which can be found in your Applications folder. Click on the button Internal Modem and the following screen appears:

Enter the following telephone number: 0114 2224849
Enter your University userid (in lower case)
Enter your Remote Access (Rats) password (in lower case). Note that this is not the same as your campus/email password. If you no longer have this, then you can request a new one from:
CiCS User Account Management System
Click the Connect button, checking first that you have connected your Mac´s modem socket to your telephone point using the supplied modem lead. You should hear the modem dial the phone no., followed by a series of whistles and buzzes. A message should then appear saying that you are connected, and you should be able to browse the internet.
In principle, if you wish to use another ISP, you would just use their phone number, userid and password in place of the Rats ones
