Phishing Example 3

This is an even more convincing phishing email sent on the 31st May 2007.

phishing email

The message is asking you to provide your account details or else your account will be deactivated - CiCS is not in the business of threatening University members!

This message contains several tell-tale signs of online fraud:

  1. The message does not come from a University of Sheffield emaill address, it came from mfps@midcoast.com.au
  2. It says" "We are deleting all SHEF.AC.UK email account to create more space for new accounts." That would be a major disruption and makes no sense.
  3. It mis-spells database as 'data base' and centre as 'center'
  4. It gives no contact email address or phone number.

Nobody in CiCS knows your password! Passwords are encrypted on secure machines. We will never ask you to confirm your password for verification, as we do not know what it should be.
