Reasons for Acquiring your Details
Although the financial gains in accessing your bank account details are immediately obvious it may not be so apparent why somebody would want your University username and password.
You may think that there is nothing on your computer or in your account worth stealing; however, your password is valuable for the following possibilities:
- Your computer or account will often contain a wealth of personal information; ranging from birthdays through to the bank details themselves.
- Malicious users can access your account and get your address books for spam or phishing emails.
- They can use your email address to send more realistic phishing messages.
- They can try your email address and password at various internet banks and financial sites.
- They can use your email address and password to create online bank accounts
- They can use your details to gain control of your computer, and use it to carry out further malicious activity.
