If you use a PC, you need to ensure that security updates are installed automatically. CiCS do this for the Managed XP Service, if you use an ordinary PC, you should:
- Click the Start menu and select Control Panel
- Click the Security Center icon
- At the bottom of the window, click Automatic Updates

- Ensure that Automatic is selected
- Select the update frequency to be Every Day
- Select the update time to be a time that you typically have the computer switched on.
- Click Apply, and then OK
Emergency Update
If you do not wish to wait for the automatic process to run its course, for example if you have heard of a new potential risk, you can update your PC at any time using the following steps.
- Start Internet Explorer (not FireFox or Chrome etc) and go to the Windows Update website:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- Click Scan for updates.
If you have not used this site before, it may need to download a small program to your computer. This program is important and safe - you should agree to receive it.
Your computer will then be checked and you will be offered a list of critical updates, based on your exact needs. - Click Review and install updates.
You will be able to see the size and purpose of each listed item and have the option to download a few at a time if you are using a slow internet connection. - Click the Install button.
The set of updates will be downloaded and installed in one operation. You may be asked to restart the computer when the process is complete.
