Even the most IT literate staff member arriving at the University will benefit from finding out about the specifics of University computing, about the uniqueness and the idiosyncrasies.
Some notable features of the way we do things here are (see right hand links for more info):
- Most staff use PCs, but we also support Macs, iPads/iPhones, Android phones/tablets and various other portable devices.
- Students in open-access areas use a robustly managed Windows XP service. It is envisaged a managed Windows 7 service will be rolled out for the 2012 - 2013 academic year.
- Staff can use the Managed XP service for hassle-free computing and like the student service a managed Windows 7 system is currently being tested.
- Staff tend to use Thunderbird as a stable client for their email. Staff and Students can login via Muse and access their email via Google Apps. It is also possible to use Mac Mail, Outlook or Windows Live Mail.
- Some of the University systems are available for use from home or off Campus.
- Secure systems can be accessed via MUSE (requires VPN connection from home).
- Online teaching modules are offered through MOLE via MUSE.
- Training for Staff can be booked through the Learning Management System (LMS).
- All lecture theatres are equipped with overhead projectors, screens and most have audio equipment.
- Rooms can be booked through the Google Calendar or centrally through the Room Booking service.
- We provide antivirus software for free for University and home computers.
- We provide a limited range of discounted software for Staff and Students.
In addition to the IT infrastructure, we introduce staff to the services available from the CiCS business units. New staff learn about:
- the booking system and timetabling activities of Room Bookings;
- booking AV equipment and video conferencing facilities;
- the facilities available for staff at the Octagon;
- opportunities at the Drama Studio;
- design, printing and photocopying at Print and Design Solutions.
