Spaces and Groups
Within uSpace there are two different type of places where communities can collaborate, Spaces and Groups. The sections below explain the differences.
Groups
Groups are lacking in sophistication but are very quick and easy to use. They are ideally suited to informal activities. Any registered user can set-up a Group within uSpace - just be aware of the privacy setting for groups. There is also the ability to set up a Group via MOLE for a specific community of users.
- They include discussions, wiki-like documents, polls and blogs.
- Security of the group is set by the Group leader and can be amended later if need.
- Membership of Groups is completed via invitation or application.
Spaces
A Space is more functionally rich, and should be general used for formal activities. As the owner of a Space you are responsible for its administration and content. There is training available for Space administrators. It includes projects, as well as the usual content types of documents, blogs & discussions.
- It also provides the capability for a much finer grade of control over what users can do within a Space, so for example you can control whether documents with attachments are allowed.
- You can give separate user communities different permissions within a Space. For example, one set of users could be allowed to edit documents, whereas others can only view and comment on them.
- Spaces can have sub-Spaces with their own permissions. You could create a sub-Space for just staff within a wider Space open to staff and students from your department.
- Membership is set by the Space administrator. Your community could be any member of staff from a Department or student from a particular course.
