Macintosh VPN Client (OS 10.5)

Computers using Mac OS 10.5 have the VPN client 'built-in' and you don't need to install any software - simply configure the built-in software with our VPN service settings.

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Double Click on Network
  3. Click on the + sign in the bottom left, this will present you with the following screen:

  1. In the window that appears, enter the following information

    Interface: . . . . VPN
    VPN Type: . . . . .PPTP
    Service Name: . . .University
  2. Click the Create button
  3. In the window that appears, enter the following information:

    Server Address: . . . . vpn.shef.ac.uk
    Account Name: . . . . .Your university username, for example cs1cjw

    Tick the box marked "Show VPN status in menu bar"

  1. Click the Advanced button.
  2. Tick the box marked "Send all traffic over VPN connection"

VPN "Padlock"


  1. Click OK
  2. You should now be able to connect. You will be prompted for a password, this is your remote access password.
