Research Ethics Review Procedure
Background
Ethics approval is required by the University of Sheffield for all research carried out by staff or students that involves human participants, their data or tissue. This is explained in the University Research Ethics policy. Staff, postgraduate research students and students on taught courses use the University´s Research Ethics Application Form, Participant Information Sheet and Consent Form. Ethics review will be carried out within CILASS by members of the CILASS Network appointed as Ethics Reviewers. The ethics review procedures in operation in CILASS are overseen by the University Research Ethics Committee. Should the Ethics Reviewers be unable to agree regarding a research proposal, the proposal will be withdrawn, revised and resubmitted.
CILASS Research Projects
Once funding has been confirmed, and allowing adequate time for approval before starting data collection, 3 copies of the completed Research Ethics Application form (plus Participant Information Sheet and Consent Form where applicable), should be submitted to the CILASS Research Ethics Administrator, Nicola Reilly (n.reilly@shef.ac.uk). Three reviewers, University staff members of the CILASS Network who are independent of the research, will be nominated by the CILASS Research Ethics Administrator. One of these three reviewers will be designated the Lead Reviewer. Initial review will be undertaken within 3 weeks of receipt of the application. The timescale for subsequent review will depend on the complexity of any amendments required.
