Fourth CILASS Staff-Student Conference on IBL
Tuesday, 13th April 2010, 10am-4pm in CILASS @ the Information Commons
CILASS is pleased to announce the fourth annual staff-student conference on inquiry-based learning (IBL). The aim is to celebrate and explore the wide and diverse range of IBL activity across the University, offering opportunities for staff and students to share new and innovative practice and to discuss themes and issues that arise from their IBL experiences. The 4th conference is jointly organised by the CILASS Student Ambassador Network and the CILASS team.
This one-day event will take place on Tuesday, 13th April 2010. It will be designed flexibly to enable people to drop in and out during the day, choosing sessions based on interest and time commitment. The conference will in particular offer students an opportunity to tell their side of the IBL story, as part of on-going IBL development within the University.
The theme for the day is `Dreamers of Dreams´, based on Arthur William O´Shaughnessy´s 1874 `Ode´, better known in Edward Elgar´s set-to-music version `We are the music makers´. The poem celebrates the dreaming of dreams, the passing of knowledge between individuals and generations, collaborations which create great cities, where everybody, no matter their background or future, is a `mover and shaker´. At a point where CILASS and the CILASS Student Ambassador Network are drawing to a close, but where ideas and activities are taken forward at many different levels, the SAN felt this theme to be particularly appropriate, and the key note will tie these various strands together during the conference. There will be four rooms on the day, each following a slightly different format. Sessions are invited to follow one of the following:
MOVERS AND SHAKERS: an opportunity for staff and students to share their approaches to, and front-line experiences of, IBL as part of a specific module or case. These will include CILASS-supported projects, but also other IBL activities across the University.
WORKING TOGETHER AS ONE: examples of an IBL approach through a staff-student partnership model whether to collaborate on module development at an individual level, or to hear about one of several new staff-student partnership models being instigated around the University IBL here involves staff and students working together to explore common goals in learning and teaching. A BREATH OF INSPIRATION: a series of hosted discussions around ideas and experiences with IBL, with staff and/or students hosting either separately or jointly. In your proposal, please share an outline of your chosen topic and why/how you feel the discussion will benefit you and/or other participants.
We will also set up an area with a large write-on wall for staff and students to share their thoughts, under the theme of THE WORLD´S GREAT CITIES. We know that IBL has formed the common denominator for many departments to engage with students as partners this will be a visual representation of staff and students exploring together. This room will also be a base for those wanting to get together and talk about their thoughts. No sessions are invited for this aspect of the conference, but you are welcome to pop in any time for a breather and a chat.
Sessions will be 50 minutes in length. As exchange of perspectives and experiences is the purpose of the day, all sessions should aim to encourage discussion amongst those attending, and we would like to limit any presentation (without interaction) to no more than 25 minutes. Contributions are warmly welcomed from staff, students, or mixed staff-student teams. Please note that this event is not limited to those involved in CILASS-funded modules or projects all contributions relating to IBL are welcome.
We now invite you to submit a 200-300 word summary of your proposed session. This should include the following information:
- Title:
- Names of contributors (please indicate whether staff or students):
- Department/School:
- Summary: (please include information on planned activities, e.g. MOVERS AND SHAKERS (presentation + discussion)/ WORKING TOGETHER AS ONE (IBL as an approach to staff-student partnerships)/ A BREATH OF INSPIRATION (hosted conversation)
