Brendan StoneDr Brendan Stone, Academic Fellow, CILASS email : B.Stone@sheffield.ac.uk
I am a Teaching Fellow in the School of English. My academic interests are interdisciplinary and centre on the relationships between human identity and narrative, particularly in the context of `mental illness´. I came into academic life late, after having worked in a variety of roles and locations, such as on building sites, in shops, and as a cook. Most of my teaching is in twentieth-century literature and cultural theory. I convene modules on dystopian literature, the novella and the uncanny, and I am also responsible for a module in literary theory which examines the relationship between narrative and identity, with special reference to the literatures of trauma. I have a strong interest in using new technologies to enhance teaching and learning. In July 2007 I was awarded a Senate Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching. In addition to working as a CILASS fellow, I have been awarded funding under the Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) Grants Scheme to develop an innovative cross-disciplinary undergraduate module which will bring together students from the arts and humanities and the social/human sciences. My research is increasingly involving me in working directly with users of mental health services. I am involved with an NHS funded project which is working with service-users to improve the primary care of individuals presenting with mental health issues. This is an aspect of my work I am looking to develop further. I am a long-time mental health service-user myself, and have a strong commitment to the rights and empowerment of individuals using mental health services and/or living with enduring mental distress. I am committed to promoting service-user led research wherever this is feasible. For CILASS, my work includes the development of an online UoS Inquiry Based Learning 'Ideas Bank', which will disseminate a wide variety of ideas for incorporating IBL into teaching and learning across faculties and disciplines. Linked to this, I am also involved with work on producing and disseminating |
