The Civic University then and now
Following on from our centenary, we undertook a major project to consider its vision and identity. Our strategy would be based on our values and rooted in our founding principles, but given new relevance for our contemporary global context.
Penny donations
Inspiration came from the penny donations given a century ago by Sheffield factory workers to establish a university which would benefit their economy, health and children. It also reflected the University's global impact as a top University for research and teaching, and the fact that today's students and staff come from more than 140 countries. What unites this international community is a passionate desire to put knowledge to work for the good of others.
Making a difference today
Today staff and students are rallying around our growing innovation and impact as a 21st century civic university, making a difference to people in our own city and around the world, tackling real problems and providing knowledge which improves and enriches lives.
Our innovative work in this area has was recognised through the award of the Times Higher Education University of the Year award.
