The course is intended to inform engineering practitioners in the principles of protective design in the context of civilian structures. The course gives an overview of the physical processes involved from basic explosive chemistry to blast shock formation, threat spectra and basics of protection, and computational analysis and prediction methods.

- A study of what explosives are, how blast waves form, how they propagate through air and how they interact with targets to produce high intensity loading.
- Qualitative study of how materials and structures respond to this type of loading.
- Simple, quick analytical tools for approximate quantification of structural response to intense dynamic load.
- A more detailed study of the theoretical basis of computational tools for the prediction of both the magnitude of blast load and the subsequent structural response.
- Practical guidance in "hands-on" use of commercial computational codes.
- Studies on protection strategies against blast loading.
