MSc in Environmental Management of Urban Land and Water
Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and Institute of Highway Engineers approved as satisfying part 2 academic base requirements for a Chartered Engineer under UK-SPEC*
We live in an increasingly urbanised world, where currently half of the global population is located in cities. By 2030, it is estimated that 60% of people will live in an urban environment. This creates tremendous pressures to manage urban land and water resources in an environmentally sustainable way, to meet current development needs and to ensure the quality of these resources is preserved or enhanced for future generations. However, there are different demands and problems at the global scale. In the developing world there are many Asian, African and Latin American cities where rapid growth combined with inadequate water supply, sanitation, waste collection and waste management systems create serious urban pollution and health hazards. In contrast, in the developed world, there are greater problems from historical pollution of land and water resources by former industries. In all cases there are competing social, economic and environmental issues that must be considered. Consequently sustainable management of the urban environment has become one of the major challenges for the 21st century, creating a need for environmental managers able to apply multidisciplinary skills to assess complex problems and provide practical solutions.

Environmental management is a systematic approach to finding practical ways for saving water, energy and materials, and reducing the negative impacts of human development on these natural resources and the environment. It attempts to balance economic growth and development with environmental quality, to maximise the welfare and well being of individual communities and society as a whole. With increasing industrialisation of urban environments, the role of the environmental manager has become more important as environmental regulations require industry to manage and control the interaction between themselves and the wider environment. The skills you learn on this course will therefore be in high demand.
This MSc course combines the theoretical with the practical, giving our graduates the most robust and versatile set of technical skills and knowledge possible, and a clear competitive advantage in the employment market.
