Biography

Bob has worked within the UK water and environment industries for the whole of his career. After obtaining a Masters in Organic Geochemistry, he worked as a chemist and bacteriologist on water supply projects before specialising in groundwater pollution and its prevention, firstly within a Regional Water Authority and then the National Rivers Authority. In these roles he was involved at local, regional and national levels with research and the development of guidance and policies associated with groundwater quality, its protection and relevant associated land use. From 1997, Bob headed up the Environment Agency's National Groundwater and Contaminated Land Centre providing a focus for and expertise on technical issues relating to the sub-surface environment, including the remediation of contaminated land and the management of a £2 million programme. During this time he established a high national and international profile for the Agency in this field.

Since 2003 Bob has taken on a wider role in the Agency, firstly as Head of Ecosystems Science and then in managing the Integrated Catchment Science Programme. This work provides the scientific underpinning for policies and regulation, relating to the European Water Framework Directive and ultimately Integrated River Basin and Coastal Management.
