Training

When you start as a Cleaning Assistant at the University of Sheffield you will have a week-long induction.

SueThe induction consists of ‘Welcome to the University’, Cleaning Training Stations, Familiarisation of your buildings/area and ‘On The Job’ training.  The University has a history of investing in its people and cleaning services is no different. All cleaning staff have the opportunity to undertake an NVQ Level 2 Award in Cleaning and Support Services.

The Cleaning Team Leaders and potential Team Leader are given the opportunity to undertake a City & Guilds Level 1& 2 Cleaning Science and Supervision 2 year part time course.

In September 2010 two staff members commenced the City and Guilds Level 1 & 2.  In September 2011, for the first time in a decade we have a record 4 staff commencing the first year of the City and Guilds, improving career succession planning not only within Cleaning Services, but throughout the department.

MargaretIn August 2010 the current Cleaning Team Leader undertook a comprehensive Management Development programme to assist them with a step-change from Cleaning Supervisor to Cleaning Team Leader.

As part of the Staff Development Review Scheme (SRDS) there is an opportunity for staff to highlight areas they wish to undertake training and development and it doesn’t necessarily have to be role specific.

In 2010 post SRDS, staff have undertaken training in:  First Aid, COSHH, ILM, Aspiring Managers, and equipment specific training such as Carpet Cleaning and Buffing.  So if there is something you are interested in, just ask!
