PhD Studentship in Physical-Chemical Modelling of Cell-Mineral Interactions

We are looking for a UK home student (only) with a first class or upper second class degree in biochemical engineering, environmental engineering, colloid chemistry, mathematics, or related subject to undertake a PhD project. The successful applicant will form an integral part of a multidisciplinary team to understand the interactions between the various components of the complex underground system (i.e. minerals, water, microbes and pollutants) in order to be able to predict, and potentially manage, biodegradation activity within contaminated soils and ground water (http://www.shef.ac.uk/cmi/). This project specifically aims to develop a physical-chemical model that describes the interactions between mineral surfaces and microbes.

The successful candidate will receive a research council stipend.
