Roger Pickup is Visiting Professor of Molecular Microbial Ecology at the University of Sheffield and is a microbial ecologist/environmental microbiologist located at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Lancaster.
His research interests are in the application of molecular techniques to problems in microbial ecology with emphasis on:
detection of specific bacteria, particularly bacterial pathogens;
relating community structure to function (natural attenuation of contaminated aquifers, biogeochemical cycling in freshwater);
an examination of non-culturable but ecologically significant bacteria in freshwater and;
evolution of genetic elements in bacteria isolated aquatic environment.
