Year Abroad
All Honours degree courses involving French extend over four years and students are required to spend a period of residence in France or another francophone country following the completion of the second year of their studies.
Above all, the Year Abroad provides a unique opportunity to see the country, speak the language at first-hand, put into practice the linguistic ability already acquired and bring it to a higher level of proficiency.
The experience of living abroad and acquiring intercultural skills is invaluable in itself and an asset in any future career. In short, it is culturally enlightening and personally enjoyable.
What we offer!
The French Department offers a range of exciting options for the Year Abroad. Students can study at a French or overseas university (Canada, Réunion), work as a teacher in a French school in France or in DOM-TOM (Martinique/Réunion etc), apply for one of the Department´s work placement opportunities in the Lille Chamber of Commerce or organize their own work placement in France or a French speaking country. Students have also, in the past, taken the opportunity to go on voluntary work schemes to Francophone Africa.
Studies
Your studies continue on your YA. Most students do a Year Abroad project for which they receive supervision and support from Sheffield. Work placement students have the option to write a `Rapport de Stage´ about their work experience programme. Students at French and Francophone universities also follow examined courses.
