Hispanic Studies is part of the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics, along with French, Germanic Studies, and Russian and Slavonic Studies. The department is called Hispanic Studies because students have the opportunity not only to study Spanish but also Portuguese and Catalan.
Many of our students choose to combine Hispanic Studies, or just the study of Spanish, with other languages offered in the School, or with a subject from another department. These are known as dual degrees.
You can also choose to start a new language, such as Catalan, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Polish or Czech.
When looking at combinations of subjects bear in mind the distinction between `and´ and `with´ degrees.
- 'And' degrees (eg. Hispanic Studies and French) involve a 50/50 split between the two subjects.
- 'With' degrees allow you to choose a ‘Major’ and ‘Minor’ focus. In a Major/Minor degree - e.g. Hispanic Studies with Japanese - you study the first subject (Hispanic Studies in this example) for the major part of your degree and the second subject (Japanese) as the minor part. The split will vary from course to course, but as a rough guide the major subject will make up around 70% of your degree and the minor 30%
For updated entry requirements and more details about the different degrees listed on this page please consult the courses for Hispanic Studies in the online prospectus.
