How to Apply

Applying for a postgraduate programme

You are welcome to contact the department to discuss your application, but for formal consideration, you must complete the University's application form.

You can apply online, or you can download the application forms from the University's postgraduate web pages

Entry Requirements

We are looking for strong potential students. The main measures of strength we will use are:

  • What your referees say about you
  • Your writing sample
  • Your record of academic achievement

For more information please visit the entry requirements page:

Entry Requirements

The application

Your application must consist of:

1. The completed application form.
2. The referee's form completed by two referees who should each send it to us directly. Your referees should be people able to address the issue of your academic abilities and performance.
3. A writing sample in English of 2,500 - 4,000 words. You could send one longish essay or two short ones - though a single one is better. This can be on any suitable topic. A final year undergraduate essay in any of the collaborating subjects in Cognitive Studies will normally be a suitable choice. But you might find it easier to produce such a sample if we set you a topic and suggest some reading. The Director of the MA in Cognitive Studies will be happy to do this on request
4. Overseas applicants must also include an official academic transcript in English, and documentation of English language qualifications if you are not a native speaker.

Deadlines

There are no deadlines as such, however there will be deadlines for the applications you will want to make to the various sources of funding available.

Please see our fees and funding page for more information:

  • MPORTANT NOTE: AHRC QUOTAS. In its 2008 competitions (both for doctoral and Masters awards), the AHRC is to impose quotas on how many applications institutions may submit. We in this department aim to finalize our decision on which applicants to support in applying for AHRC funding on 18th March 2008. If your application for admission to the University reaches the Philosophy Department after this date we will therefore not be in a position to consider supporting you in this way. To be sure of avoiding this, we strongly recommend you mail your applications no later than the end of February (if you are a UK-based applicant; if you are based elsewhere in the EU you should mail them earlier still.)
  • Hitherto non-EU students who wish us to consider putting them forward for an ORSAS award were asked to aim to have their application reach us by no later than 10th December in the year before they wish to start. But this funding scheme is currently subject to change so please check the websites cited above in the section on ‘Fees and Financial Support’ for up to date advice, or contact the Department.
