Student Discipline
On registering with the University of Sheffield, students sign a legal agreement to abide by the regulations of the institution.
The Discipline Regulations include definitions of misconduct, including:
- Conduct which constitutes a criminal offence where that conduct:
(a) affected or concerned other members of the University community or members of the public or (b) damages the good name of the University. - Behaviour which brings or is likely to bring the University into disrepute, for example misconduct in a community or other public setting (alcohol is regarded as an aggravating factor in any disciplinary case, not an excuse).
Breaches of the regulations
Regulations set out the potential consequences of proven breaches of the discipline regulations.
Penalties include:
- a reprimand
- a fine
- a specific undertaking to good conduct (with conditions)
- payment of compensation
- removal from University accommodation (where appropriate)
- suspension / exclusion / expulsion.
In responding to concerns, the University will always support decisions of and actions taken by the police and Environmental Health authorities.
