Travel and transport
The University has an integrated transport policy which:
- promotes sustainable travel
- reduces the need to travel
- reduces one person to one car commuter travel
- ensures site specific travel plans reflect local circumstances.
The University, in its efforts to alleviate traffic, access and parking problems, and as part of the HUMUS Partnership, works with other large employers, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and the City Council.
Promoting the alternatives
The University seeks to enhance and promote the provision of public transport services, walking and cycling, including in its information provided to students.
Other steps taken to discourage car use include:
- pre-arrival guidance for students
- park and ride routes
- showering and changing facilities for cyclists
- access to reduced price season tickets for tram and bus
- improving security measures on walking routes
- signage and maps for walking routes
- working with the City Council to ensure safe cycle routes and signage
- discounts at local bicycle shops
- improved information about public transport in useful locations (such as in University residences).
Car parking
The University of Sheffield recognises that, while some staff and a relatively small number of students have no choice but to use cars, it does have a responsibility to seek to diminish parking in residential streets while meeting the reasonable needs of staff and students.
Priority for parking permits (for which payment is required) is given to those with disabilities, carer responsibilities, and no practical alternative to driving to the campus.
