Free Lunchtime Concerts: Spring 2010

All concerts start at 1.10pm in Sheffield University Drama Studio. Doors open at 12.40pm. These concerts are designed to be informal, alternative ways to spend all or part of a lunch hour, and members of the audience may arrive and leave between items.

Katie Hockenhull has recently won the coveted Dame Eva Turner Prize. She has performed the roles of La Contessa Le Nozze di Figaro (Birmingham Conservatoire) and Nerone L'incoronazione di Poppea (Birmingham Conservatoire). She has recently performed scenes from Turn of the Screw, Falstaff and Die Tote Stadt (RAM), and will be performing Elsa in Wagner's Lohengrin. She has also performed in English Eccentrics, The Fairy Queen, World premier of Dee, Don Giovanni, Ariadne Auf Naxos, Yeoman of the Guard, Carmen, Merrily we roll along and West Side Story. She has performed La Rondine with BYO, Trois Melodies accompanied by Peter Hill in The Adrian Boult Hall as part of an International Centenary Conference on Messiaen, and Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto quartet for The Prince of Wales at Caerphilly castle. She also performed Dvořák's Song to the moon, Smetana's Ten lasky Zenfrom The Bartered Bride and Delibes Flower Duet with RAM Brass Band in the Dukes Hall.

Katie has recently returned from performing Italian opera scenes in Northern Italy with Iain Ledingham. She has performed in masterclasses with Susan Bullock, Gerald Finley, Dame Anne Evans, Sergei Leiferkus (London masterclasses) and studies with Barbara Bonney at her singer support studio in Salzburg. She is currently studying at The Royal Academy of Music on a Master of Arts course with Glenville Hargreaves and Audrey Hyland, and has been awarded a bursary.

She gained a BMus (hons) in performance with First Class honours at Birmingham Conservatoire. At Birmingham Conservatoire she was awarded an entrance scholarship, and she won the Winifred Micklam Prize for first year undergraduates. She has also been awarded a scholarship from The Sir Richard Stapley Trust this year.

The Heather Roche and Sarah Watts bass clarinet Duo was established in 2008 through a shared passion for bass clarinet and contemporary music. The duo made their debut in London in 2009 and have had new repertoire written for them by composers including Dave Bennett Thomas, Elspeth Brooke, Richard Glover,John Hails, Iain Matheson, John Hails and Stuart Russell.
Sarah and Heather are also keen to promote and perform existing bass clarinet duo repertoire in addition to encouraging new works and are currently preparing Pierluigi Billone's 1+1=1 for performance in late 2010/2011.

The Ensemble of Enthusiasts originated in Cambridge in the early 1990’s. During the last six years, based at the University of Sheffield, the Ensemble has taken the form of Duo, Trio, Quartet and Quintet and of both vocal and instrumental complement, exploring a wider repertoire as edification and research.

The music in this programme encompasses compositions from Europe of the 12th Century to the 18th Century, for stings, keyboard, classical guitar, recorders, voice and percussion.

Kim Roberts is a final year music student who has been leader of the saxophone section in Sheffield University Wind Orchestra for three years, played in Sheffield University Jazz Orchestra for two years, and is also in a saxophone quartet. Kim was involved in the department's production of 'Company' in her second year.

Gina Walters is also a final year music student. Gina is a former Head Chorister of Sheffield Cathedral Choir, where she
participated in several BBC Radio 3 Broadcasts, CD recordings, and international tours. Since studying at Sheffield, Gina has performed in several musical productions including Sondheim’s Company (Susan), and Trial by Jury (Bridesmaid.)
