Summer Music and Arts Festival 2011

The Summer Festival is the result of the continuing artistic, collaborative partnership between the University of Sheffield Department of Music, and Sheffield Cathedral.

Taking place between Wednesday 01 June and Sunday 12 June, the festival delivers a jam packed series of events exploring music, film, literature, world cultures and much more.

Highlights this year include: Former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion introduces his collection of war poetry, presenting scenes from various conflicts of the 20th & 21st centuries. Istanbul born singer Çiğdem Aslan brings an authentic voice and exquisite styling to the poignant songs associated with the Greek and Turkish diasporas after forced population exchanges between the two countries (as conjured up in Louis de Bernière’s Birds Without Wings.) One of the most successful female Jazz singers of the decade, Claire Teal performs music from her new album. Classical music is performed throughout the week - Beethoven, Copland and Chausson by University Orchestras, Rossini's dazzling Petite Messe Solenelle by Sheffield Oratorio Chorus, and the combined choirs of Sheffield Cathedral and St John’s Church Ranmoor perform music for Pentecost. Staying with tradition we feature another cinematic horror masterpiece of the silent film genre, Phantom of the Opera (1925) with live music accompaniment.
