A VERY WARM WELCOME TO SUMMER FESTIVAL 2009!
Summer Festival is the result of a new artistic, collaborative partnership between the University of Sheffield Department of Music, and Sheffield Cathedral. Taking place on Saturday 06 June - Friday 19 June, the festival aims to deliver a jam packed series of events exploring music, art, film, literature and much more.
HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE...
Nosferatu the Vampyre A performance of the silent film horror masterpiece, with organ improvisation by Darius Batiwalla, additional screens will be displayed showing the organists hands and feet
'Indus´ A new cutting edge music group who fuse together Indian Classical Music, Western Classical, and Jazz. Complex tabla beats, exquisite flute phrases, rhythmic santoor patterns and lyrical sitar tones, create an intricate kaleidoscope of sound and emotion not to be missed.
James MacMillan CBE leading British composer and conductor, will be giving an exclusive appearance, talking about his work as a composer, and the event will include performances by Sheffield Cathedral Choir
Angela Brownridge internationally acclaimed pianist will play works by Haydn, Liszt, Mendelssohn and Chopin. `One of the world´s finest pianists!´ THE NEW YORK TIMES

Ethos
- To establish a partnership between two significant Sheffield institutions, that will work together to provide music and arts events to the community, offering a diverse programme of events that are affordable to all
- Raise the profile of the Department, and the University, to see both contribute more towards cultural Sheffield
- Raise the profile of Sheffield Cathedral, to promote it as a centre of excellence for music and the arts
- Provide a platform to showcase University student talent, outside the norm of the regular concert series
- To give a student committee, who organise the festival, a practical working insight into Arts Management and Administration
