Our Confucius Institute is run in partnership with two of the top institutions for higher learning in China, Nanjing University (NJU) and Beijing Languages and Culture University (BLCU), both of which provide excellent short- and long-term Chinese language, culture and teacher training courses throughout the year as well as full undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Confucius Institute Headquarter/Hanban Scholarships

Hanban scholarships

In order to promote the sustainable development of Confucius Institute and international Chinese education, Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters (known as Hanban) has established the "Confucius Institute Scholarship" program to encourage students, scholars and Chinese language teachers worldwide to study Chinese language and culture in China, or proceed to a Master´s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL).

CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIPS 2013

Application deadline: Monday 22 April 2013, 12 noon

Scholarship categories for 2013:

- Scholarship for One Semester
- Scholarship for One Academic Year
- Scholarship for Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(MTCSOL)

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Scholarships are open to applicants who are non-Chinese citizens in good health, aged between 16 and 35 (the age limit for Chinese language teachers in post is 45).

A) Scholarships for one semester

Can be taken in autumn semester 2013 or spring semester 2014. Applicants can choose to study Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, or Chinese Philosophy. Applicants should have a score of at least 120 on the HSK (level 2) and at least 40 on the HSKK (elementary level), or have completed a minimum of 60 hours of study at the Confucius Institute.

B) Scholarships of one academic year

Applicants can choose to study Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, or Chinese Philosophy. This scholarship runs for one year starting in autumn 2013. Applicants should achieve a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 3) and at least 60 on the HSKK (primary level), or have completed a minimum of 120 hours of study at the Confucius Institute.

C) Master in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

The scholarship lasts for two years and will run from autumn 2013. After successful completion of the study, the candidates will be awarded Master’s degree in MTCSOL and graduate certificate.

Applicants are required to have a bachelor degree or its equivalent with a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 5) and a score of at least 50 on the HSKK (intermediate level). The applicant must also make a written commitment stating that he/she will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation.

Where can I take HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test)?

The Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield is a HSK test centre and offers HSK examinations Grade 1-6 (please note that SCI currently doesn't offer the HSKK exam).

WHAT DO THE SCHOLARSHIPS COVER?

All three of the Confucius Institute scholarship types cover:

1. Registration fee, tuition fees and basic learning materials
2. Accommodation on campus
3. A one-off resettlement subsidy
4. A monthly allowance
5. Outpatient medical service
6. Comprehensive insurance

Monthly allowances and resettlement allowances are:

One Semester: CNY 1400/month plus CNY 1000 resettlement
One Year: CNY 1400/month plus CNY 1500 resettlement
Two Year MTCSOL: CNY 1700/month plus CNY 1500 resettlement

Please note that the one off resettlement payment will not be awarded to any student who has been studying in China for more than 6 months prior to being enrolled.

HOW DO I APPLY? WHEN IS THE DEADLINE?

Step 1: Online application

All applicants need to log on to http://cis.chinese.cn set up an individual account. Please make sure you read relevant information about host institutions before completing the online application form.
You need to have electronic copies of all the required documents ready to upload in the application process. Once this form has been submitted electronically please print out a copy of all the documents submitted to complete the application process.

Step 2: Applying at the Confucius Institute

Once the online application is complete, applicants shall also submit hard copies of the following documents by Friday 15 April 2013 at 12 noon to Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield, 5 Shearwood Road, Sheffield S10 2TD (or hand these in at the SCI reception):

• A signed copy of the application form, downloadable from your account at http://cis.chinese.cn
• A photocopy of your passport photo page
• A copy of the HSK/HSKK results report
• Notarized highest education diploma attained or proof of study
• A reference letter from your language tutor (stating the number of hours of Chinese you have taken)

Additional requirements for Master’s Degree Scholarship applicants only
• Two letters of recommendation by professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English)
• A written commitment stating that the applicant will be engaged in Chinese teaching for at least 5 years after graduation.


WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I APPLY?

All applications will be reviewed by the Confucius Institute which will recommend outstanding applicants to the relevant Chinese host institutions.

Host institutions will review the applications and submit their proposed scholarship candidates list to Hanban.

Hanban will organise an expert panel to make the final selection and award the scholarships by 15 June 2013. This information will be published on http://cis.chinese.cn

The various Chinese Universities will send successful applicants an “Admission Notice” and enrolment package by 1 July 2013.
