What is Convocation?

Convocation is an alumni association with a place in university governance. It appoints 42 members to the University Court - the annual meeting of the University's stakeholders - and the Chairman of Convocation and one other member of Convocation are members of the University Council. Convocation provides an opportunity for graduates to become involved in the welfare and the future of the University.

Who are members of Convocation?

All graduates of the University of Sheffield become members on graduating. Many do not notice this in the excitement of graduating - but it is usually announced or included on the degree ceremony programme.

How are we run?

There is an annual general meeting in the autumn where the officers and members of a 23 person Executive Committee and our representatives on the University Court are elected. Our administrative costs are paid by the University.

Social activities

The Social Committee of Convocation arranges a series of social events for members of Convocation and their guests throughout the year.

What else do we do?

Convocation has a modest income from investments. The investments are managed by the University, but the income is used at the discretion of the Executive Committee to support various projects within the University.
