The University and cultural life

The University of Sheffield takes an active role in sustaining a vibrant artistic and cultural environment in the city of Sheffield.
The University runs a series of Open Campus events that the general public are encouraged to attend. These include:
- Department of Music concerts, these cater for every taste and recent concerts have included the Norwegian Hardanger Fiddlers, the Chamber Orchestra, the Café Band from Vienna and a series of concerts in the Winter Gardens.
- University Drama Studio productions, recent productions have included Two, Stockholme, Humpty Dumpty and Still Waiting.
- Every March public lectures and seminars are held as part of National Science & Engineering Week and the Festival of Social Sciences. In 2010 these include events focusing on the Hawley collection, Shapes and Patterns in Nature, Green and Living Roofs and the Fear of Crime.
- Arts-Science encounters (March-June 2010) includes lectures on Dancing to Darwin: The Comedy of Change, The Psychology of Music and Marcus Du Satoy: The Art of Mathematics.
