Skills for Life
Develop your personal skills and well-being
The 'Skills for Life' programme is a series of self-help groups and workshops run by the Counselling Service.
You can learn new skills with your peers, which will enable you to cope better with the demands of University life.
You can:
- Develop academic skills to transfer to your working life
- Develop interpersonal and communication skills that promote good friendships/relationships
- Learn healthy lifestyles that promote health and well-being
Learning takes place in a group environment that reflects the real challenges students face coping in the various social networks at University. You also gain an opportunity to learn and develop your social skills.
Groups are run over a number of weeks (normally 4 or 5 weeks). The facilitator of the group will offer information/advice and introduce healthy ways of coping with specific problems. The progressive development of practising new skills and learning from one another in an atmosphere of peer support are the features of this learning approach. Groups will be no larger than 12 people.
Workshops are one-off events that run for 2 and 3 hours. They offer students information that promotes an understanding of their problem. It is an opportunity to learn some new skills and get some tips and advice on how to overcome specific difficulties.
