| WATER FRIENDLY FARMING - LAUNCH 18 JUNE 2012 |
A major new applied research initiative on sustainable water management.
The meeting will be held on Monday 18th June 2012 from 12.30-2pm in the Attlee Suite, Portculis House (opposite the Houses of Parliament) Westminister, London
The project is led by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, Pond Conservation and Syngenta, working in partnership with Anglian Water, the University of York, the Chemicals Regulation Directorate, the University of Sheffield and the Welland Rivers Trust. The project is relevant to all water management and conservation policy makers and practitioners.
Water Friendly Farming aims to provide the first catchment-scale evidence of how effective rural land management measures are at protecting freshwater biodiversity and delivering water-based ecosystem services in the countryside. The work provides a reality check on the likely effectiveness of sustainable catchment management and will influence approaches the UK takes to CAP reform, WFD implementation, delivery of ecosystem services and biodiversity protection in the water environment.
The project began baseline analysis of its three catchments in 2010 and is already providing unique new data on freshwaters across the farming landscape. After this first 2-3 years baseline work we will shortly be starting on large-scale practical work.
RSVP to Jo Fever at Pond Conservation jofever@pondconservation.org.uk / 01865 483249 by Friday 1st June.

| David Lerner becomes Visiting Professor at Peking University - 24th April 2012 |
David Lerner has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at Peking University (PKU), often seen as the highest ranking university in China. This arises from the close connections between the Catchment Science Centre at Sheffield and the Centre for Water Research (CWR) in PKU. As part of the ceremony, David gave a lecture "Can we have real rivers in Urban areas?". The two groups are intending to work together in the Heihe basin, developing integrated models of hydrology and economics to support decision making in this inland basin. |

| The Don catchment website goes live! - 6th February 2012 |
The website is designed to showcase the Don catchment as a study system, and detail the various water-related research projects that use the catchment as a study system. Obviously there is a large overlap with the work of the CSC, and several CSC projects are detailed on the website. It is hoped that the website might inspire new collaborations and future research within the Don catchment. |

URSULA conference 17th/18th November 2011
"Integrating multiple facets of river corridor development"
|
This conference drew together 4 years of research from a number of disciplines, and a wide range of topics, which demonstrates the gains which may be made by integrated and innovative development in urban river corridors.
The conference covers topics such as:
- Quantifying the cooling effect of the river
- Mapping and analysing patterns of biodiversity
- Investigating perception of biodiversity and people's wellbeing
- Exploring the impact of alternative urban designs on costs and values
- Understanding how people and users influence river corridor development

URSULA Conference 2010
"RIVER CORRIDORS IN THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT
DEVELOPING A VISION FOR THE FUTURE" |
The aim of this conference is to reflect on the important changes that have occurred in relation to the way we view water in the urban environment and in particular river corridors. We will look at the range of future measures that will be required to meet existing and future requirements posed by development, regeneration, climate change and well-being agendas to further enhance the urban water environment.
Conference objectives:
• To consider the state of play and direction of travel
• To look at the underlying drivers influencing change
• To look at funding and other mechanisms to further develop a positive vision of water in the urban environment, not least in the main river corridors
• To help build networks |

| Don Catchment joins the UNESCO’s HELP iniative |
The Don has been accepted as a new basin in UNESCO’s Hydrology for the Environment, Life and Policy (HELP) initiative .The CSC's was accepted by the Evaluation Committee January 2009. The committee was particularly pleased to have an application from a post-industrial urban basin and acknowledged the good science already taking place through the CSC. They encourage the building of a stakeholder vision beyond separate projects and we hope to be doing this as we try to become more involved in the WFD implementation process with the EA and others. The HELP network will give us access to good practice elsewhere in the world where Integrated Catchment Management is emerging or developing. |

| WES Event - Summer Floods 2007 Workshop |
The flooding events of this summer come at a time of increasing concern over the future frequency and intensity of weather and climate related hazards. However, the floods also revealed an apparently 'new' range of vulnerabilities to the public (e.g. critical utilities, potential dam-break effects, large-scale drainage excess), each of which produced significant social disruption and concern.
On Friday the 14th of December 2007 the Lancaster Environment Centre in partnership with Sheffield University will be hosting a one day workshop as part of the ESRC/NERC funded Water Environment and Society seminar series. This workshop will focus on the implications of these flood events for the research community. |

| Publications from Water, Environment and Society seminar series now available |
Participants from the ESRC-NERC funded seminar series ‘Water, Environment and Society: What happens when you change the scale?’ have contributed papers to a special issue of the journal Interdisciplinary Science Reviews. These papers explore a range of issues emerging from workshops held over the last 18 months. The authors focus on the challenge of integrating environmental and social facets of water management. Perspectives on what this challenge entails, who is involved, and how integration might be acheived are presented. Abstracts of these papers are available on the journal homepage and copies of the full papers are available by contacting authors directly. |

| Launch of NERC-funded Knowledge Transfer Network on groundwater-surface water interactions and hyporheic zone processes |
We are pleased to announce the launch of a new NERC-funded Knowledge Transfer Network on groundwater-surface water interactions, and hyporheic zone processes, which is run by a team from the universities of Sheffield, Birmingham, Lancaster and Southampton and from CEH and the Environment Agency
The Hyporheic Network will help to disseminate new research on this topic to the science end-user community, identify end-user priorities for future research projects, prepare a Handbook on GW-SW interactions and hyporheic zone processes for river managers; and develop interdisciplinary research proposals that facilitate improved river-corridor management.
We hope to attract hydrologists, ecologists, geochemists, hydrogeologists, geomorphologists (etc) to participate in the Network.
Similarly we hope researchers and science end-users from central government, regulatory, industry, consultancy and NGO sectors will want to participate. |
