nostoc bacterium

A study led by Dr. Guido Sanguinetti of the Department of Computer Science, University of Sheffield, has been featured in an EPSRC "pioneers" publication.

Dr. Sanguinetti's team used computer models to map the metabolism of the Nostoc bacterium. Nostoc fixes nitrogen and releases hydrogen, which can potentially be used as fuel. Dr. Sanguinetti comments that "it will certainly be some time before a pool of bacteria powers your car, but this research is yet another small step towards sustainable fuels".
