DCS scores highly in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) has recognised the high quality of research carried out in the Department of Computer Science. 65% of our research work was rated world leading or internationally excellent in terms of its originality, significance and rigour. According to the widely used "research power" measure (research quality multiplied by volume) the Department is ranked 15th out of 81 similar departments in the UK.
Much of our work is collaborative with other disciplines and departments, particularly within the Faculty of Engineering. All of the University's subjects in the Faculty of Engineering had 50% or more of their research work assessed as world leading or internationally excellent, confirming Sheffield's international reputation in engineering as a whole.
Overall, the University of Sheffield was ranked among the top 10 universities in the UK for research power.
The RAE is a peer review exercise to evaluate the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. The assessment informs the selective distribution of funds by the UK Higher Education funding bodies.
