Her Majesty The Queen meets DCS staff

Her Majesty the Queen met staff from the Department of Computer Science during a recent visit to the University of Sheffield.

The Queen was in Sheffield to officially open the University's new world-leading research centre into Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) is a state-of-the-art £12 million research institute at the University, which is set to make Sheffield a world-leader for research into Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Two professors in the Department of Computer Science, Prof. Neil Lawrence and Prof. Magnus Rattray, hold positions in SITraN and greeted Her Majesty at the institute. Prof. Lawrence is SITraN Professor of Computational Biology and co-lead of the Machine Learning Group in the Department of Computer Science and the Computational Biology Group in the Department of Neuroscience. Prof. Rattray is SITraN Professor of Statistical Bioinformatics.

During the afternoon, Her Majesty toured the University's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing, and lead a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC) with Rolls-Royce.
