Speech researchers on the Gadget Show

Speech researchers from the Department of Computer Science appeared on the Gadget Show this week.
Following refereeing controversies in the world cup, the programme developed a number of gadgets to assist football referees. Professor Phil Green and Dr Peter Wallis from the Department of Computer Science implemented a speech recognition system that could detect verbal abuse by players. Each player wore a bluetooth microphone which relayed the sound of their voice to a PC. Each voice signal was then processed by an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system in order to detect swearing. The researchers christened the system PROFANE - PROfessional Football And No Expletives.
You can see the programme online via the Demand Five channel.
