Researchers from the Department of Computer Science have recently featured in New Scientist magazine, in an article about clinical applications of speech recognition technology and animated talking avatars.

The article reviews the work done by Professor Phil Green and his colleagues at the University of Hull. The team is developing a device that can detect and interpret facial movements when someone mouths a word, recognising what they are saying. The work of Priya Dey, a PhD student in the Computer Graphics group, is also mentioned. Priya is developing a talking head (called TARA) that could help people to learn a foreign language.
