ADOPT scheme events
The ADOPT scheme is divided into two phases:
Phase One (Year 12)
- ADOPT Launch Event: 'A Taste of Dentistry' - A hands-on activity day to introduce ADOPT students to the School of Clinical Dentistry and provide them with an insight into drilling and filling teeth, oral surgery, oral pathology, hygiene and therapy and dental technology. This is a full day’s experience and is followed by a reception and introduction to the programme for parents/ carers in the evening.
- Hollowford Activity Weekend - an outdoor activity and team-building weekend, with a chance for ADOPT students to meet current dental undergraduates and the ADOPT team in a relaxed and informal setting.
- Primary School Initiative *NEW* - A chance for students to get valuable experience communicating the importance of good oral health and hygiene to a primary school audience.
- Study Skills Revision Session - Study skills and revision techniques session.
- Revision Session - Chemistry-specific AS revision session.
- 'UCAS Preparation Day' - Talks from staff on how to complete the UCAS application* and how to write a successful personal statement, followed by a library-based session to familiarise ADOPT students with The University of Sheffield’s Health Sciences Library.
- Work Experience - The ADOPT team will arrange placements in dental environments for the ADOPT students over the summer of Phase One to Phase Two.
*Please note: if applying to study Dentistry at the University of Sheffield, ALL students must take the UKCAT test. Although information about this will be provided to students on ADOPT, we strongly recommend that you view the UKCAT website for further information at:
Phase Two (Year 13)
- 'Preparing for Interview' - A session involving current undergraduates and esteemed academics, focusing on interview techniques. A chance to discover what an interview at the Dental School is really like- direct from the experts!
- Revision Session - 'Making the Transition' session.
- Revision Session - Chemistry-specific AS revision session.
- 'PowerLab' - An interactive physiology practical, designed to offer support for A2 level Biology and insight into teaching methods used in the first year of the dental programmes.
- Celebration - A chance for students to celebrate all they have achieved over the two year ADOPT scheme, and say farewell to the friends they have made (prior to the few months hibernation period that will no doubt ensue leading up to A2 level examinations!)
An ADOPT-specific online forum is also accessible to students over the two year period of the scheme, where they will be able to post items for staff and students view upcoming events and photos from events past. Students will also be set small dental-related online assignments via this facility, which will be assessed by dental school staff.
