Applications for Elective Study
Placements
The School of Clinical Dentistry offers elective placements to students in clinical years of their dental course. Elective placements of up to 2 weeks are available from February to July. We are able to accept a maximum of two students at any one time and a maximum of eight places per year. Placements will allow you to shadow our students, generally observing clinical and laboratory sessions.
Application details
Applications to the Elective Programme will be accepted once yearly. All documentation must be received electronically by 5.00pm (GMT) on 1st October 2012 for electives in 2013.
Visas
Once accepted, it is the responsibility of the overseas applicant to obtain the necessary visa for their elective placement.
As a result of recent changes in UK immigration policy, all non-EU/EEA students are required to have a Tier 4 (General) visa before entering the UK to start a dental elective placement. This rule also extends to non-visa nationals (for example, a British National Overseas) who can ordinarily enter the UK without prior entry clearance and arrange a student visitor status for short periods of study.
Prior to applying for an elective placement please refer to the following information, to help you with your application.
- Check the UK Border Agency website at: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/studying/adult-students/ for information about Tier 4 student visa requirements. Here you will be able to check that you fulfil the criteria and have the necessary documentation.
- All visiting dental elective students will be issued with a CAS number. For full details of this process please follow this link www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/international/faq/cas
- Please note that neither the admissions service nor the School of Clinical Dentistry can assist with visa applications other than by providing the Certification of Acceptance.
- Electives cannot be re-arranged if visas are not obtained in time to start on the agreed date. We recommend that you apply for your visa promptly as approval can take considerable time.
