Biography:

I joined the University as a Lecturer in 1976 following junior hospital posts in oral and maxillofacial surgery and an MRC Training Fellowship in experimental pathology. Following a WHO Fellowship working with Professor H Shroeder in Zurich, A Council of Europe Travelling Fellowship working with Professor J Pindborg in Copenhagen, and a one year secondment to the Dental School in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, I was appointed Senior Lecturer and Hon Consultant in Oral Pathology in 1985. After being involved as an RCS College Examiner, Regional Specialty Adviser and Clinical Tutor over the intervening years, I was appointed to the post of Trent Regional Postgraduate Dental Dean in 1998.

Research Interests:

Experimental and human oral cancer and pre-cancer including epidemiology, odontogenic neoplasms, TMJ Osteoarthrosis, drug responses and cytokine gene expression in murine and human Sjogrens syndrome. Immortalisation of human oral epithelial cells using retroviral, temperature, sensitive oncogene transduction. Over 80 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and books as well as numerous abstracts and lectures delivered.

Educational Activities:

Undergraduate dental students, dental hygienists and nurses; in general and oral & maxillofacial pathology and oral medicine. Postgraduate supervision of masters and PhD students in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. General pathology and human disease on Primary and Final FDS courses. Previously, Examiner in General Pathology and Chairman of Primary FDS Examiners, RCS England and Examiner in Oral Pathology and Human Disease, and Pathology, Final FDS RCS England.

Postgraduate Dental Education

As Postgraduate Dean since 1998 - quality managing provision of CPD for 1800 dental practitioners and other members of the dental team; quality management of 8 Dental Foundation year 1 (DF1/VT) schemes for 96 trainees; 60+ trainees in dental foundation year 2 posts (DF2/SHOs), 50 trainees in the dental specialties; those on the returning and retraining scheme; induction for overseas dentists and support for those taking the GDC Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) together with supporting dentists and doctors in difficulty, and provision of career advice.

UK Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans and Directors

As Chair of COPDEND, responsible for co-ordinating the strategic development and policy for postgraduate dental education in the UK. Recent projects include commissioning a Dental Foundation Training Curriculum, development of a national portfolio (now in online e-format) including assessment tools, for dental foundation training, Standards for Dental Educators, establishing a Dental Foundation Advisory Board; all as part of Modernising Dental Careers. Recently established National Framework for Managing Dentists in Difficulty.

Responsible for the development of three Websites.
