Biography

I qualified from the University of Leeds in 1979 and gained a Master’s Degree in Conservative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute in London in 1982. I have full registration as a Specialist Endodontist with the General Dental Council.
I have always been enthusiastic towards dental education and have two roles in my professional life: as a teacher in the Academic Unit of Restorative Dentistry and as lead clinician in my own referral dental practice.

Professional activities

I established Stephen Godfrey Dental Care in 1985 and nowadays limit my treatments to the diagnosis of facial pain, root canal therapy and restoration of teeth. Stephen Godfrey Dental Care is a key referral centre for the Yorkshire and Trent region and has a team of restorative specialists taking referrals for endodontics, implant tooth replacement therapy, prosthodontics and periodontics. In the past twelve months the Practice has accepted referrals from 263 dentists in 180 dental practices and carried out 900 individual treatments. http://www.sgdc55.com

I am a member and past-President of the British Endodontic Society and a member of the British Dental Association.

Teaching

Currently I am responsible for the content and delivery of the undergraduate endodontic curriculum at the University of Sheffield, School of Dentistry and deliver lectures, tutorials and clinical skills laboratory and clinical teaching to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year dental students. The contemporary nature of my teaching reflects many years of clinical knowledge and depth of experience in patient care.

I work with departmental staff and clinical tutors to keep them updated on the undergraduate curriculum and relevant endodontic treatment protocols for clinics and I encourage final year dental undergraduates to visit my practice to observe treatments in surgery to help their clinical development.

Along with the senior academic staff at the University of Sheffield, I have helped design and develop a new innovative Post Graduate Doctorate Degree in Endodontics, a full time three year course. I am the clinical lead for this course. http://www.shef.ac.uk/dentalschool/masters/dclindent/endondontics
