Biography
I joined the University of Sheffield in 1982 and have been closely involved in research and teaching in restorative dentistry over this period of time. I am currently Head of the Academic Unit of Restorative Dentistry. I also serve as an external examiner for the University of Birmingham and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and as a regional representative for the British Society of Periodontology.
Research Interests
My research falls within the strategy for research of the Dental School, within the Oral Health and Disease Group and includes:
- Microbiology of periodontal diseases and the effects of treatment on the microbial flora within periodontal pockets.
- Host factors, and their potential use as markers of disease in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF).
- Regenerative medicine.
- Clinical trials. These have investigated the plaque, stain and calculus inhibitory effects of dentifrices and mouthrinses. A clinical trial testing a sensor for monitoring periodontal disease will commence in March 2011.
- The effect of psychological stress on the outcome of periodontal treatment.
- The development of image analysis techniques to improve the measurement of periodontal treatment outcomes.
- Quality of life measures to determine patient centred outcomes.
Teaching Interests
My teaching interests are in the clinical teaching of restorative dentistry and in particular periodontology.
Current projects
I am currently working on a clinical trial to test a sensor developed in collaboration with colleagues at Queen Mary´s University of London that detects a panel of proteases for the diagnosis and monitoring of periodontal disease.
