Meet the Staff
Alison Patrick

Alison Patrick is a lecturer in Law and Healthcare Ethics at the School of Clinical Dentistry and Programme Director for the Master in Dental Public Health. Alison has a background of law and moral philosophy with over ten years experience of working in dental research and has been involved in several major national projects with particular focus on commissioning dental services. Currently, Alison's main area of interest is autonomy and its role in the patient clinician relationship. Alison is currently responsible for delivering and co-ordinating ethics teaching both on the under-graduate and post-graduate curriculum as well as staff development and teaching quality assurance.
Barry Gibson

Dr Barry Gibson is a senior lecturer in Medical Sociology and Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes. His research interests include the social science of the mouth and oral health in everyday life.
Mr. Tom Dyer

Tom Dyer, BChD, MPH, FDS RCS, DDPH RCS, FDS(DPH)RCS, FFPH, works as a Honarary Lecturer in Dental Public Health. He completed higher training in Dental Public Health in 2006 and was admitted to the Specialist List in 2005. He also works in practice as a specialist in oral surgery. Prior to this he was a practice principal for 6 years and worked in hospital oral surgery for 10 years. His principle research interests relate to the use of skill-mix in dentistry, specialist services in primary care and aspects of dental epidemiology.
Dr Zoe Marshman

Zoe Marshman, BDS, MPH, PhD, DDPH, RCS, FDS(DPH)RCS works in Dental Public Health both as a Senior Lecturer in Dental Public Health and also in the NHS as a Consultant at Sheffield Primary Care Trust. She is lead for the module 'Dental Public Health: Application and Critique'. She teaches and co-ordinates dental public health teaching to dental undergraduate as well as providing teaching to hygiene/therapy students and postgraduates. Her research interests are particularly centred around the oral health of children and young people.
Peter G. Robinson

Peter G. Robinson is Professor of Public Health, Director of Research for the School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield and Director of the School’s Outreach and Dental Hygiene and Therapy programmes. He is also an Honorary Consultant Sheffield Primary Care Trust. He spent his first 17 years after qualification providing dental treatment in primary and secondary care. His research interests include the evaluation of oral health care and oral health related quality of life.
Stephen Walters

Stephen Walters is Professor of Medical Statistical and Clinical Trials, School of Health and Related Research, University of Sheffield. Stephen is a medical statistician with over 15 years´ experience of designing, analysing and reporting the results of a variety of studies including, randomised controlled trials, observational studies and surveys. He has over 180 publications (including 101 in refereed journals and 3 books). He has been a co-applicant, statistical advisor and collaborator on numerous health services research projects. Stephen has developed several courses on teaching medical statistics to medical and health science students, clinicians and allied health professionals. Stephen has also co-authored two textbooks: 'Medical Statistics: A Textbook for the Health Sciences' and 'How to Display Data'. Stephen is also course director for the MPH(HSR) degree and co-ordinates and teaches on the module HAR6035 Introduction to Statistics.
Janine Owens

Dr Jan Owens, BSc Hons, PhD., PGCHE. Lecturer in disability, worked in the National Health Service for 12 years, lived and worked in Saudi Arabia for 4 years, and returned to academia to do a degree in Psychology in later life. She then counselled people and won a scholarship to do a PhD working with people with learning difficulties exploring their healthcare encounters. She teaches on the undergraduate curriculum at the Dental School and is co-ordinator for special needs dentistry. Jan leads and co-ordinates the Masters module in health promotion in ScHARR for the Masters in DPH/PubHealth/EuroPubHealth. Jan's research interests are critical approaches to health, health promotion, disability, qualitative methods. She has numerous publications and has been involved in several research projects which focus on patient involvement, child and family perspectives/experiences.
