A photomicrograph of human tooth pulp

Oral Neuroscience Research Group

Research Group Leader

Professor PP Robinson

Summary and Principal Aims

The aim of this research group is to develop new methods of managing the distressing pain and sensory disturbances that result from injury or from dental and oral disease.

Our group includes dental and basic scientists, and clinicians, and so we are able to pursue a wide range of activities, from investigations undertaken within the field of oral biology through to clinical investigations on our patients. We have modern research laboratories utilising techniques such as immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy and image analysis, and we run a clinical service for the treatment of patients with facial pain and with nerve injuries.

By using the information obtained in the laboratory to guide clinical decisions, this has led to improved patient care.

Our work is divided into two main areas:

The management of nerve injuries

Mechanisms of pain arising from the tooth pulp
