Create a design and win £2,000!

Create a design expressing the shared endeavour of the Arts and Humanities in understanding human culture and society – and you might walk away with £2,000.

Your design can be low-tech or high-tech, polished to a high design standard or a little rough around the edges. It's the ideas and the concept that matters to us.

The winning design will be used on posters and postcards informing students about their faculty, and about student faculty events and meetings. We want the competition to get students thinking about the shared endeavour of the Arts and Humanities in understanding human culture and society. What is it that we share? And how can we communicate this through design?

We want to encourage students to reflect on the nature of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities as a coherent unit, and also prompt a discussion about visual culture in our faculty. This is also a great opportunity to unearth and showcase our students’ interdisciplinary, creative and artistic talents.

How to enter

Your design must be original, striking and communicate the shared endeavour of Arts and Humanities research. It can be created using any materials or technologies, but should be made to be used in a variety of formats, including posters, postcards and webpages. You may wish to make something using only digital technology, or you could make something and take a photograph of it. We are more interested in the concept and look of your design, than in receiving a highly-polished entry that is ready to go into production. So don't be put off if you have no professional design experience.

You should prepare two JPEG images of the design: one for a poster and one for a postcard. Each file should be a maximum of 3MB. Then email them to the following address from your University email account, giving your name and department of study:

artsdesigncomp@sheffield.ac.uk

Make sure you read: The deadline for entries is 12 noon on Wednesday 28 April 2010.

The competition is open to all students who were studying at the University of Sheffield on a degree programme (UG dual or single, PGT or PGR) in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities on 12 March 2010.

Judging the designs

The entries will be judged by a panel including academics and student reps from the Faculty, staff from Marketing, and an independent designer. The panel will shortlist the best entries, broadly judging each entry for:
  • relevance to 'the shared endeavour of the Arts and Humanities in understanding human culture and society'
  • effectiveness as a design that engages student interest
  • overall strength of idea
  • attention to instructions in the creative brief
One design will then be chosen from the shortlisted selection as the overall winner. The creator/s of the winning design walk away with a prize of £2,000!
