Teaching
"I currently teach Applied Microeconomics to 2nd year undergraduate students and Applied Microeconometrics to masters students. I am also involved in running the undergraduate dissertation module for third year students.
Applied Microeconomics covers a number of subjects such as transport, the environment and health care. In each of these areas economic analysis plays a useful role in informing real-world decision making. The aim of the module is to use the theoretical concepts that students learn in their first year as a tool to study real-world decisions such as whether to introduce a new high speed rail service or to make a new drug available on the NHS. Since many of these issues are complex, assumptions often have to be made to simplify the analysis. Being aware of such assumptions and discussing them critically in tutorials and workshops is an important part of the module.
My approach to teaching is to introduce students to various methods for conducting economic analysis and, importantly, to encourage them to think critically about the use of these methods. I also try to make use of current research in my teaching."
