Our KE

The nature of the research undertaken by staff in the Department of Economics means that we have strong links with end-users. For example we have provided advice to all major UK government departments and this has led to important changes in policies and practices.

Professor A Dickerson Member of the Sector Skills Development Agency Expert Panel.
Consultancy activity for the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Low Pay Commission. The LPC work was instrumental in allaying government fears that the introduction of a minimum wage for 16-17 year olds would adversely affect education participation.
Dr M Dietrich Ongoing consultancy and training work with the Department of Work and Pensions.
Dr P Lenton Consultancy work for the British Council on the global value of education exports. This work has generated considerable interest from government departments and was reported extensively, including by the BBC and in The Guardian.
Dr J McHardy Consultancy work for the Kelham Island Brewery on competitiveness in the brewing industry.
Dr S McIntosh DTI: study of non-certified learning in the UK and its impact on productivity.
DfES: cost-benefit analysis of modern apprenticeships (used by the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee); economic benefits of raising the education participation age.
UNESCO: policy work on the relationship between education and employment.
Dr S McIntosh, Dr J Lindley & Professor J Roberts Welsh Assembly: evaluation of the Want2work pilot programme.
Professor P Mosley UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs: design of micro-insurance.
World bank: Microfinance and poverty in rural India.
Centenary Rural Development bank of Uganda (via USAID): design of drought insurance. This work is now used by the World bank as the model for agricultural microfinance.
Chronic Poverty Research Centre (via DfID): chronic poverty and economic growth.
Evidence to the House of Commons Overseas Development Committee on aid effectiveness.
Professor P Mosley and Dr P Lenton Sheffield regional health Consortium: health and debt.
Esmee Fairburn Foundation/DTI: community development finance institutions in the UK’s poorest communities.
Dr J Perraton Work with senior trade union officials on the implications of globalisation.
Professor J Roberts Expert member of two NICE clinical guideline groups (multiple sclerosis and heart failure). Work here has involved development of the SF-6D health status index that has been adopted by the pharmaceutical industry and policy makers.
Department of Health and ABPI: demand for pharmaceuticals for work on the Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme (with N Rice, University of York).
New forecasting models for the NHS GP prescribing budget.
