Please note that for practical reasons it is not possible to study abroad as part of a four-year degree with employment experience.
Study AbroadThe Study Abroad programme gives you the chance to spend your second year in the USA, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong or Singapore. As students in other departments can apply, there is more competition for places than for the Erasmus programme. Most students receive an Erasmus grant to help with the extra costs of living overseas. The Department of Economics currently has exchange links with:
More about the Erasmus programme
Tuition feesFor UK/EU students starting your degree programme at Sheffield from 2012, the tuition fee for an overseas placement year will be £2,000 in 2013-14 and £1,350 in 2014-15. The fee for a year in which one semester is spent abroad will be £5,500 in 2013-14. (Fee for 2014-15 to be confirmed.) For non-EU international students the policy on tuition fees is decided on an annual basis. In 2012-13 the policy is that you pay 50% of your normal tuition fee for an entire year studying abroad or the full amount if you go abroad for just one semester. No tuition fees are payable to the overseas host university.
What our students sayMost of our students who study abroad regard it as the highlight of their university career. Here's what Alex Murray, a BSc Economics graduate, had to say: "The Erasmus experience was amazing. I studied in Venice alongside students from all over Europe and made loads of friends. My communication and confidence skills improved drastically, having no language skills before going I can happily hold a conversation in Italian now. "The organisational and financial support provided by the University and staff in the department was brilliant. Every time I hear someone mention they have the chance to do it, I just say don't even hesitate. Without Erasmus I may never have seen Venice, let alone lived there." |

Economics students taking a dual degree with a language spend their third year abroad. Students of most of our other courses can also apply to study abroad through the Erasmus and Study Abroad programmes. Dual degree students must also obtain approval from the partner department. The marks you achieve abroad are converted to the University of Sheffield grading system and form part of your degree.
