EdD in Higher Education

The Sheffield EdD in Higher Education provides research-led teaching and supervision in a staged programme of doctoral studies. It provides a thorough grounding in the philosophy, principles and practice of educational research as well as a critical understanding of contemporary higher education in all its settings, locally and globally.
The programme is based around residential weekend study schools. The weekends are held in Sheffield and run from late afternoon on Friday through to lunchtime on Sunday (October, February and May each year), with an induction day for new students on the Friday of the first October weekend.
The taught component incorporates six structured modules and the research component leads to a thesis centred on a theme or topic related to higher education.
This is a broad and flexible research-based programme that will be relevant to a range of professional and managerial careers and is especially suited to part-time study.
The course aims to enable students to:
- Conduct high quality research into higher education in a supportive environment, with leading scholars in the field
- Explore theories, policies, practices and new ideas relating to higher education
- Acquire academic and scholarly understanding of contemporary issues in higher education
- Gain a doctorate in a supported manner, while still working full-time
